Objective: to develop an active bystander campaign for university students that encourages bystanders to make a positive impact when they are confronted with unacceptable behaviour.
Writing + Design: with the philosophy of ‘active bystanders’ as the starting point, I wrote and designed a multi-faceted campaign aimed at university-aged youth. The idea to lead the campaign with a question was to build on the natural instinct of youth to question anything and everything. As asking really? is part of the lexicon of youth anyway, encouraging them to do so in potentially harmful situations is a comfortable and familiar way to facilitate that transition from passive bystander to active bystander. The follow up tagline was developed to remind students that they have the power and the ability to act in a way that effects positive change. The design is intended to be simple enough to let the question be the focus of the reader’s attention as well as flexible enough to accommodate various scenarios. The project scope included posters, postcards, buttons and web graphics.
